I usually just use the Apple+K command in the Finder to Connect to  
Server - and have favourites there.. I found the network browsing to  
be too many clicks, and unreliable as you mention.

Another method is to have a shortcut url on your desktop - or  
dynamically automounting them through the 'servers' bit of the  
Network Browser - you add a machine description to the Netinfo db -  
but you'll need static ip or dns names for all your machines to do this.
