[WelMac] internet set up problems

Hi, 

I have an emac that's only a few months old and i'm finally getting round to
setting up internet on it only to have some problems.
Firstly the cable that came with it doesn't fit into ph jack so bought a new
one and loaded info from isp following instructions in user guide but it
won't connect.

Sometimes says modem problem and sometimes says no dial tone.

How do I know if I bought the right cable? It won't work with my dad's one
that works on his emac that's a couple of years old.

Any ideas would be appreciated,
