Hello,
I have an eMac on OS X 10.2.8, still.
My daughter has a new digital camera, a Panasonic.
She has successfully loaded many photos into iPhoto, about 900, to date.
Last weekend she unplugged her camera while it was still downloading
photos into my iPhoto library.
Now, when I try to start iPhoto, it just quits.
OK, so I should check that I have the latest version of the iPhoto
software, so I find and install update 4.0.3, and try to start iPhoto.
iPhoto says that it needs to update the iPhoto library.
I say go ahead and update the library.
iPhoto goes through a sequence of loading photos and displays a list of
source libraries including a Photo library(922), Last Roll(0), Last
Month(0), Baby(92), etc.
Also displays thumbnails for first roll loaded in September 2003.
However, it still shows a "Progress" screen claiming that it is
"Updating Photo Library", with "Time remaining:About 11 minutes". . . .
for the last half hour, and won't allow me past to access the photos.
   Any suggestions ?
Martin.
